"Dancing in the Shadows" - Original Artwork

I loved the idea of capturing the graceful movement of koi as they weave through deep, shadowy water. I used rich indigo, turquoise and violet tones to create the feeling of depth, then let the brilliant oranges, reds and creamy whites of the fish come forward almost like flashes of light.

As always, I was drawn to the contrast between color, texture, light and shadow. Thick palette-knife strokes give the koi and lily pads a sculptural quality, while the darker water creates a dramatic backdrop for all that movement. “Dancing in the Shadows” feels energetic and peaceful at the same time—like catching a fleeting glimpse of koi moving beneath the surface of a garden pond.
